If you have an idea that you think could improve the lives of others, make it happen and speak to those who can help you. And use your enthusiasm, particularly as a student. A collective voice is a very powerful voice. If you are confident to speak out alone then great if you prefer a team approach then also great. Speaking out against what you perceive to be poor practice is a huge topic, perhaps deserving of an article of its own, but if everyone kept quiet, then improvement would not happen. It is better to regret something said than not said. Seek support from mentors and others, and if there is one thing nurses have ingrained, it's reflection. We must not let fear rule what we feel is the right thing.

This does not negate our duty to be that voice. The action of speaking has consequences that can go either way. There is always someone somewhere who will help you. It could be a dilemma if regarding a placement or someone you work with and are relying on to sign off, but that does not mean you cannot speak out if something is not right. There is no point in sugar coating it if it is regarding a tough topic or situation. Speaking out may not always be a positive experience. "We must not let fear rule what we feel is the right thing" Integral to the role, especially in this field, is to enable a voice for those we support.īeing students though, we may think we are only here to learn, but flip that on its head and there is so much we can teach others using our enthusiasm, so please do not be afraid to speak up. If you are familiar with learning disability nurses this will have come as no surprise. The energy, ideas and enthusiasm of the group coming from our screens could have lit up the national grid. The conversation in the whole meeting between us all was just that, a conversation. To my surprise, the words tumbled out and I received a wonderful response. I had prepared my question and expected to feel slightly nervous when I asked it. However, this was Ruth May and David Harling. Even my tutor was not surprised to learn I cannot cope with silence. Not only that, but our voices were heard, at the top.
